Upon encountering this book of palindromes and collages, the ideal response would be for the reader to wonder: which came first, the palindrome or the collage?
At the beginning of this process, the question of the image’s subordination to the word seemed obvious. What is interesting here is that the word to which the image is supposedly subordinated is itself in the service of form, of reversal, of the reversibility of reading. This requires us to see the word quite literally—both on the page and in the imagination (the image of the word itself).
The number of images available to me for making collages is infinite, yet in the reality of my own space and time it is finite. The same is true of the words that can function in palindromes (for example, the word palindrome cannot itself be used to make a palindrome—at least not in Spanish; in French, it can*). Would Juan David and I be evenly matched in relation to these quantities? Should the collage serve as an illustration of the palindrome, or is it rather the bringing together of a system of signs that acquire meaning in the act of making the collage, after reading and rereading the palindrome?
Palindromes are like electrical bursts from the unconscious. Behind the hidden side of the word lie countless suggestions. The same is true of collage. Some palindromes resemble telegrams sent from another planet; at times they seem like coded messages from a mad detective, or clues for deciphering enigmas. They can also be answers to questions that do not exist. The same is true of collage. And sometimes they appear simply as self-evident entities, playful verbal contraptions, mischievous word games howling: what else is language for, if not to play?Could there be a language without a single palindrome? It would be something like a totalitarian language—the language of dystopia par excellence.
